About us

Myself and my partner, Lou, have been keeping skunks for around five years now, though we would never dream to call ourselves experts, we have found that keeping skunks is a never ending lesson, you learn new things all the time.

As well as six skunks other inhabitants in our menagerie include Dwarf Mongeese, Sugar Gliders, Mouselike Hamsters, and Gambian Pouched Rats.

Lou met her first skunk in 2003, shortly after moving to North Devon. Then one day Lou arrived home and asked if I knew anyone who possibly wanted a skunk, for some strange reason my immediate response was,

"Yes, we do, we want a skunk!".

No thought to the fact that skunks can spray, how tame is may be, housing etc., these would come later, I wanted the skunk. Fortunately due to Lou's work and our vet we had and still have excellent back-up when it comes to the more unusual animals we keep, so getting the necessary information proved to be easy, plus there are a couple of excellent resources (other than this one) on the internet specifically dedicated to pet skunks and their care.

Stompy and MaryJane: Their Story

A few weeks later, Stompy, a 3 year old male arrived at our house, he had been de-scented, was tame, if not a little nervous, and he was a cracker, and we slowly began intergrating him into our household. Slowly as time went on he came out of his shell, Stompy was never a lap skunk, contact was mostly on his terms. If you picked him up he wouldn't wriggle, but at the earliest opportunity he would wander off. Him and our black Labrador, Blaze (aka Stinky) had an understanding, and respected each others space so we had no issues there.
